Spider select handler: clean up relevant existing spider code

So far we have started the sh implementation from ground up. It will use similar subroutines as those used by gbh. The sh subroutines will be much simpler to the gbh ones, and this is a good time to switch the gbh use to the sh ones, and delete the old functions. There are probably other areas of cleanups discovered in the process of this task.
