Updates are slower than in 1.2.5

Updates appear to significantly slower in 5.4 than they were in 1.2.5. A study needs to be done to verify this and to determine the amount of slowdown, and in what version it first appeared.

This also seems to affect DELETE statements.

This seems to be generic, so any UPDATE...WHERE statement can be used to test. We should probably test for WHERE = a single value, and multi-value.
