when mariadb eventually fails to start it ALWAYS takes unnecessarily long

    Description

when "service mysql start" fails, it ALWAYS takes up too much time, ~ half a minute

no matter what the error/problem is, it will keep displaying dots of the "progress bar" as if trying to start up - after the irrecoverable error has already been encountered

See the screenshot for example: the log reports work "ended" half a minute before mariadb starting command actually exits

This looks something that was fixed on
            MDEV-6428.

Is https://github.com/MariaDB/server/blame/10.5/support-files/mysql.server.sh#L256 the service file you are using?

Which MariaDB version are you using?

            Server version: 10.3.39-MariaDB-0+deb10u2-log Debian 10

            MDEV-6428 says "Fix Version/s 10.0 [ 16000 ]" - i.e. it's fixed well before 10.3?

yes, sorry, i'm not using the latest 10.5 - 10.3 is what is in repo for Devuan Beowulf that I'm currently on

I'll try to install 10.5 and check if it solves the issue, if i encounter it again then I will comment in MDEV-6428?

Keeping this open for this issue. So yes, keep comments here.

Yes it appears 10.3 had a debian source of https://github.com/MariaDB/server/blob/10.3/debian/mariadb-server-10.3.mysql.init and 10.5+ appears to be the same https://github.com/MariaDB/server/blob/10.5/debian/mariadb-server-10.5.mariadb.init.

Not wanting to get into a rant, but it was relieving with systemd not to maintain these scripts that where barely maintained previously.

Patches welcome if you come up with something that works.

support@excsitement.com, please comment here how your upgrade went, not in MDEV-6428 (which is alredy closed, so we might miss your comment). Thanks!
