impossible to enter accented characters

My char set is utf8mb4, client, server, etc. and I cannot type or see any á é í ó ú, or ñ. I know it's the mariadb client at fault, because I can type those letters just fine in the Linux command line (bash). Also, I connected via the network with the Oracle's client "MySQL", and it worked perfectly. I can type and insert accented letters. So, ceteris paribus, the mariadb client is NOT using or accepting utf8mb4
