Conclusion was that the benefit would not be large enough for this to be worth doing.

MaxScale now has the n and the equivalent -daemon option using which it can explicitly be told to start in daemon mode (the default), so changing the default mode is now easy.

However, changing the default means that all startup scripts would have to be modified and as there is a potential that that then reveals unforeseen issues we won't do that at this point.
