I can not reproduce the failure in my development environment (neither debug and non-debug builds).

I can reproduce it both in debug and non-debug, but only if I repeat it many times until it fails. Like

$ ./mtr spider/bugfix.wait_timeout{,,,,,,,,,} --repeat 100 --parallel=auto

It takes a while and hundreds of repetitions, but it does reproduce eventually.

Hmm..., I tried the very command you suggested, but it didn't reproduce. I will look at it further.
