 Description

One of our customer is facing issue after implementing replication between two, 3 nodes galera cluster.

[Test Environment]

  • MariaDB 10.1.30
  • OP Node (Cluster) : MDBD0, MDBD1, MDBD2
  • DR Node (Cluster) : MDBDG0, MDBDG1, MDBDG2
  • Replication (Dual) : MDBD2 -> MDBDG2, MDBDG2 -> MDBD2

1. OP3(MDBD2) DB Sevice change to DR3(MDBDG2). And OP3 DATA backup.
2. Send a OP3 data backup File to DR3
3. DR3 data file delete, and restore op3 data backup file.
4. Replication sync completed.
5. New table create on DR3 DB.

  • OP3 replication completed.
  • DR1,DR2,OP1,OP2 replicaton completed by Galera cluster
    6. But OP3 (MDBD2)DB Down.

When OP-MDBD2 or DR-MDBDG2 executed the CREATE TABLE AS SELECT (CTAS) statement, we found that an error occurred when there was no data in the table that executed the SELECT statement.

[Test Scenarios]
Case#1
Execute CTAS on a table (sbtest1) with no data in OP-MDBD2.(The same result in DR-MDBDG2)
CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS temp1 AS (SELECT * FROM sbtest1);
Result : The following error occurs

Result : Both OP-MDBD2 and DR-MDBDG2 are normal

Case#3
Execute CTAS on a table (sbtest3) with no data on OP-MDBD0 or OP-MDBD1.(The same result in DR-MDBDG0 or DR-MDBDG1)
Result : All normal

Case#4
Execute 'create table sbtest4 (id int(10), primary key (id));' statement on all nodes instead of CTAS
Result : All normal

Can user try more recent version of MariaDB 10.1 and if this problem is still reproducible provide cluster configuration files and full unedited error log.

Comment by Seppo Jaakola [ 2019-11-08 ]

I tried to reproduce this issue with MariaDB 10.1.31 and 10.1.43 versions, but could not make the problem surface.
However, my test scenario may be different, as I could not understand and follow totally the scenario described above.

Please confirm if following simplified test matches with the problem in the production system:

  • two MDB Galera clusters: cluster-A and cluster-B
  • asynchronous replication configured between the clusters. One node in cluster-A operates as replication master, and one node in cluster-B operates as slave
  • no filtering for asynchronous replication, all transactions in cluster-A will replicate to cluster-B
  • in cluster-A's master node CTAS is executed with empty source table, e.g. like:
    mysql> create table t1 (i int primary key);
    mysql> create table t2 as select * from t1;

And the latter create table should cause a crash? But which node (or nodes) should crash?

Comment by Seppo Jaakola [ 2019-11-08 ]

There is one CTAS related fix in 10.1 series after 10.1.31, but it does not look directly affecting the failure scenario

seppo

regarding the point

"asynchronous replication configured between the clusters. One node in cluster-A operates as replication master, and one node in cluster-B operates as slave"

no, it is a Master <-> Master replication.

Setup and the way how is the process.

Cluster 1
A1 / A2 / A3

Cluster 2
B1 / B2 / B3

Both cluster a new and clean installed.

Start A2
Restore backup on A2
Bootstrap A2
Start A1 --> SST
Start A3 --> SST

Start B2
Restore backup on B2
Bootstrap B2
Start B1 --> SST
Start B3 --> SST

Establish Master <-> Master asynchronous replication between B2 and A2

Execute on A2

use test_db;
CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS temp1 AS (SELECT * FROM test1);

-> works fine

Execute on B2
use test_db;
drop table temp1;

-->
[ERROR] Slave SQL: Error 'Table 'temp1' already exists' on query. Default database: 'test'. Query: 'CREATE TABLE `temp1` (`id` int(10) NOT NULL

[Warning] WSREP: SQL statement was ineffective, THD: 6, buf: 164
schema: (null)
QUERY: (null)
=> Skipping replication
[ERROR] Slave SQL: Node has dropped from cluster, Gtid 0-106-3443, Internal MariaDB error code: 1047

This will not happen, if the writes will be executed on different nodes , which are not async master (B1, B3,A1,A3)

It looks for me, if the DDL was executed twice, maybe a timerace before the WSREPXid was set and afterwards again ?

Thanks @Richard

Which node shows this error, B2?

So the problem is perhaps that replication is routed back to originating node, will try next with such multi-master setup.
What are server_id values in each nodes? Server_id check should, in principle, cut replication cycles.

So the problem is perhaps that replication is routed back to originating node, will try next with such multi-master setup.
What are server_id values in each nodes? Server_id check should, in principle, cut replication cycles.

If each node has a different server_id value, then you may need to set IGNORE_SERVER_IDS in the CHANGE MASTER command to prevent a cluster from trying to apply a statement twice: once through galera, and once through the asynchronous replication. From the documentation:

Keep in mind that if replication is set up in a scenario where each cluster node has a different server_id value, and if the replication topology is set up in such a way that a cluster node can replicate the same transactions through Galera and through MariaDB replication, then you may need to configure the cluster node to ignore these transactions when setting up MariaDB replication. You can do so by setting IGNORE_SERVER_IDS to the server IDs of all nodes in the same cluster when executing CHANGE MASTER TO. For example, this might be required when circular replication is set up between two separate clusters, and each cluster node as a different server_id value, and each cluster has log_slave_updates=ON set.

Comment by Seppo Jaakola [ 2019-11-11 ]

Still cannot reproduce this issue. Now tried with two 3 node Galera clusters linked by a circular async replication between two nodes in separate clusters, according to Richard's scenario above.

I tried two different server_id configurations:

  • unique server_id for each 6 nodes
  • same server_id in all nodes within same cluster, but both clusters having different server_id

With both configurations create table, drop table and CTAS with empty source table replicated correctly in both clusters.
I'm executing all these DDL statements in the async replication master/slave nodes in both clusters.
I did not use IGNORE_SERVER_IDS in this scenario, and domain_id was not set in any node.

Also tried with same server_id in all 6 nodes, but then no async replication happens.

My test is different from Richard's, by this statement:
CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS temp1 AS (SELECT * FROM test1);
...as my test starts from clean database, and there table 'test1' does not exist. So some more information is needed to troubleshoot this issue:

@Richard,

  • do you get table 'test1' from loading your backup?
  • Is it empty table?
  • does it exist in all 6 nodes, and is empty in all nodes?
  • how is server_id used in your clusters, is domain_id defined?
  • which node crashes in your test?

The fix seems now effective and passes mtr test rounds with our jenkins. Will submit a pull request agains mariadb server 10.1

Running 10.6.8 on a 2-node galera cluster, slave of a 4-node cluster.

I have these errors constantly, while node has not actually dropped from cluster, but replication stops.

I had to set this in config files: slave-skip-errors = 1062,1032,1047
