[MDEV-14319]  mysqld: Out of memory at random if myisam_use_mmap=1 Created: 2017-11-08  Updated: 2018-02-02

 Description

myisam_use_mmap=1

OUT of memory report and crash at random times.

rebooting with
myisam_use_mmap=0
Does not crash

example, at this time at least 100 Gb free:

2017-11-08 3:38:52 140469833914112 [ERROR] mysqld: Out of memory (Needed 1232 bytes)
171108  3:38:52 [ERROR] mysqld got signal 11 ;
This could be because you hit a bug. It is also possible that this binary
or one of the libraries it was linked against is corrupt, improperly built,
or misconfigured. This error can also be caused by malfunctioning hardware.

To report this bug, see https://mariadb.com/kb/en/reporting-bugs

We will try our best to scrape up some info that will hopefully help
diagnose the problem, but since we have already crashed,
something is definitely wrong and this may fail.

Server version: 10.2.9-MariaDB-log
key_buffer_size=1073741824
read_buffer_size=1048576
max_used_connections=155
max_threads=8002
thread_count=162
It is possible that mysqld could use up to
key_buffer_size + (read_buffer_size + sort_buffer_size)*max_threads = 17602880 K  bytes of memory
Hope that's ok; if not, decrease some variables in the equation.

Thread pointer: 0x7fe45dc4c008

where mysqld died. If you see no messages after this, something went
terribly wrong...

can you please say anything about your database (use MyISAM engine only or not, are tables compressed, how big are tables, indexes), your workflow?
please also add output of

sudo sysctl -a|grep overcommit

Comment by Ainsley Lewis [ 2017-12-16 ]

sysctl -a|grep overcommit
vm.nr_overcommit_hugepages = 0
vm.overcommit_kbytes = 0
vm.overcommit_memory = 0
vm.overcommit_ratio = 50

mainly MyISAM no compression

i'd suggest to change overcommit values and see if the problem will still appear (e.g. vm.overcommit_memory = 2, vm.overcommit_ratio = 100).
from documentation in man 5 proc (http://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man5/proc.5.html)

This file contains the kernel virtual memory accounting mode. Values are:
0: heuristic overcommit (this is the default)
1: always overcommit, never check
2: always check, never overcommit

In mode 0, calls of mmap(2) with MAP_NORESERVE are not checked, and the default check is very weak, leading to the risk of getting a process "OOM-killed". Under Linux 2.4 any non-zero value implies mode 1.

In mode 2 (available since Linux 2.6), the total virtual address space on the system is limited to (SS + RAM*(r/100)), where "SS" is the size of the swap space, and RAM is the size of the physical memory, and "r" is the contents of the file /proc/sys/vm/overcommit_ratio.

I tried
vm.overcommit_memory = 2
vm.overcommit_ratio = 99

Similar problem, this time it happened a few minutes into a full mysqldump of all the databases

Comment by Alice Sherepa [ 2018-01-03 ]

Do you have chance to capture output of

top -cb

immediately after starting mysqldump?
Also please provide output of

/proc/[pid of mysqld]/limits

Comment by Ainsley Lewis [ 2018-01-03 ]

I forgot to mention
I upgraded to 10.2.11 before trying the new settings.
I also ran a full mysqldump of all databases without problem and with at least 100Gb RAM free during and after the mysqldump

It was a second mysqldump a few hours later that crashed.

cat /proc/2547/limits

Is this what you want from top?

With myisam_use_mmap=0
