 Description

MariaDB Foundation explicitly stated that an application was filed to be registered as a US 501(c)(3) entity when it was initially announced in 2012:

"The MariaDB Foundation is a non-stock corporation that has applied for the US 501(c)(3) status..."

I am unable to find useful information about MariaDB Foundation's 501(c)(3) status from various sources including:

MariaDB Foundation's status as an eligible non-profit has implications for the community, not least of which are tax implications for donors. Can you please provide EIN and 501(c)(3) status information?

There's https://mariadb.org/about/governance/ which states that this is the aim. I'll try find more information on the application process and update that page if necessary.

Indeed. Of course, that aim has been claimed for 4 years, and there's been no report of actual progress made. I expected the CEO of the Foundation to have more direct interest and influence on such an initiative. Without any update, it seems to be an empty promise long forgotten.

Hi Todd

You are quite right in that it appears to have dropped off the table in the past, for whatever reason. I can't change the past...
However, I know that right now the application is with the IRS.

That said, there are some remaining issues to consider, mainly benefits vs cost of compliance.
I am actively looking in to this.

Regards, Arjen.
CEO, MariaDB Foundation

Hi Arjen,

First, congratulations on the role.

501(c)(3) organizations have defined organizational and operational requirements.. When Monty committed to pursuing 501(c)(3) status, I understood it as a commitment to those same principles.

Thanks Todd, that clarifies somewhat.
As we have applied (I have copies of all the submitted forms/docs/etc here), with some external advice/assistance, I am at this point working on the assumption that we are in fact compliant with those requirements. So that's good, right?

Were you interested in the Foundation being compliant with these requirements overall, or were you interested (or concerned?) about one or more specific aspects? If the latter, please tell as then I can also be more specific in my answer, or attention when considering related matters.
Thanks

Regards,
Arjen.
