 Description

Dear MariaDB Columnstore Developers,

I am writing because I find the MariaDB Columnstore Server Configuration and Installation Process too overly complicated (it can be done, but takes its time):
https://mariadb.com/kb/en/library/preparing-for-columnstore-installation-11x/

And I think it does not follow the K.I.S.S (Keep it Simple) Principle, which might prevent a greater adoption, so I would propose too try to simplify it via Documentation:

  • There could be one Dynamic Webpage where you introduce the characteristics of your Server (Ubuntu, CentOS,...), if it has had MariaDB installed previously, user privileges, etc. And in the webpage could output the minimum Terminal Commands to Execute in order to configure the server for MariaDB Columnstore Installation.
  • Or maybe some sort of script that simplifies the Server Configuration Process could also work.

MCOL-1145 and MCOL-1146 are created for simplifying installation

How I envision Columnstore in the future (And I already mentioned in other issues) is as follows:

A) Actually, Columnstore is distributed as "MariaDB Server 10.2 + Columnstore Engine", I would suggest that from MariaDB 10.4 on, changes that have been on MariaDB 10.2 Server for supporting Columnstore are merged with mainstream MariaDB 10.2.

B) Offer Columnstore Engine (G.P.L.) by default distributed with MariaDB 10.4 as another regular engine, configured by default for use in a single server, and low resource usage (For example: Disk-Joins, etc.). Power Users will have to tune the engine, but it will be easily accessible by anyone.

C) Now that Microsoft has joined MariaDB Foundation, support could be asked for porting Columnstore to Windows / Windows Server.

D) Making easier to install MariaDB Columnstore (Scripts from MCOL-1145 and MCOL-1146), and making easy documentation and configuration process, as I know users that decline to use MariaDB in favour of PostgreSQL / Yandex Clickhouse / ... because of this being easier to configure and install
Some guides for installing Columnstore you can easily found on the internet are:

E) Allow to use H2O.ai in each Columnstore Node, for enabling in database Machine Learning.
