mariadb doen't work any more (Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost')

    Description

      From yesterday (without changing any setting) I cannot use mariadb because of this error: 

      ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

      Same error in 2 different PC (with KDE Neon) and with Kubuntu.

      Even after purging and reinstalling mariadb I get the same critical error. (even though the first time I can enter in mysql prompt and set the correct password).
