    Description

Monty Widenius writes in his personal blog regarding the BSL:

"MariaDB Corporation will over time create more BSL products. Even with new products coming under BSL, MariaDB Server will continue to be licensed under GPL in perpetuity. Keep in mind that because MariaDB Server extends earlier MySQL GPL code it is forever legally bound by the original GPL license of MySQL."

      http://monty-says.blogspot.com/2016/08/applying-business-source-licensing-bsl.html

He notably cites upstream MySQL's use of GPL code as proof that MariaDB is obligated to do the same. Of course, Oracle uses an "open core" model, which at least opens the possibility of non-GPL-licensed plugins (e.g., the non-GPL-licensed HandlerSocket is bundled with MariaDB Server). Two questions, given the stated intent to expand MariaDB's BSL-licensed product portfolio:

      • Does Monty speak for MariaDB in making the claims that MariaDB Server will remain GPLv2-licensed in perpetuity?
      • Does this commitment apply equally to MariaDB Server plugins, including both those available today and those which will be introduced in the future?
